Vår Energi had previously experienced challenges on the Balder field running 9 5/8’’ liners to TD due to creeping shale in the 12 1/4’’ drilled section. From previous experience, the ability to obtain rotation is crucial to be able to reach TD. The preliminary analysis showed that the maximum surface torque would be exceeded approximately 1000 m prior to TD and that they would be unable to work the liner down.


The ability to work the liner down to TD was dependent on reduction of the rotational friction to initiate and maintain rotation through the areas with the creeping shale restrictions. Bladerunner™ Low Torque (LT) centralizers from Varel Energy Solutions were selected to lower the rotational friction in the casing. Low friction Teflon bands in the bore of the centralizer ensure extremely low start up torque so the probability to start rotation to work past tight spots in the open hole is significantly improved.



A Bladerunner LT centralizer was installed on each joint along the 2000 m liner. Historical data showed a very high anticipated friction factor of 0,6 in the open hole. The actual friction factors with the Bladerunner LT installed proved to be 50% less than expected. After the successful liner installation the Vår Energi Drilling Engineer concluded; “The liner had to be worked past restrictions quite a few times with limited weight available. I doubt the liner would have reached TD without the Bladerunner centralizers”. With the implementation of the Bladerunner™ LT the customer were able to remove the swivel clutch in the drill pipe above the liner hanger running tool. The drill pipe swivel had been run on previous wells to reduce the axial friction of the string.
